Websites and Videos
To learn (or review) the basics check out the ACBL Learn Bridge page. The material goes over basics like hand evaluation, tricks, auctions, card play, and scoring.
Ralph Welton, a retired teacher, has a series of beginner bridge lessons that introduce Standard American bidding and general playing tips for beginners. His site is designed for gentle learning (think "an adult version of Mr. Roger's Neighborhood"), but the information is sound and extensive and very useful to all ages. There is a lot of good beginner material at the site plus much that would benefit even intermediate players. Note: Ralph died in 2024, but I found his archive at the linked location.
Another great source is Karen Walker's site. Her "Teach yourself to play bridge" is straightforward and has some useful additional links for beginners as well. For a summary of Standard American bidding choices, also see the site's "Standard American Bidding" page.
Karen's site references Richard Pavlicek's "Bridge Basics", another good site for the very new beginner.
The ACBL provides a series of hands to practice card play and bidding at their Learn to Play Bridge site. They also have a series of Beginner articles.
Learnbridge.nyc offers introductory materials and videos (as well as more advanced topics). They are well-written and succinct - worth a look.
Richard Pavlicek provides bidding tables for the Standard American system and some common conventions.
The Richmond Bridge Association compiled a basic set of Standard American bridge lessons, targeted toward beginning duplicate players. However, it has a lot of good info for the social bridge player as well.
James Sundstrom at Princeton University compiled a set of Beginner Bridge Lessons. The lessons use the Standard American system, but also discuss more advanced topics (clearly marked).
