A Beginner's Introduction to Bridge

Bridge is a card game that may be played at many levels. At a minimum, it is a fun social game for four friends at a private home. Many people have set up and played in such a game for decades. But bridge may also be played competitively against dozens or hundreds of players on-line or at a local duplicate bridge club. With the aid of the Internet you can play with players from across the country or the world.

The game of bridge encourages thoughtful inference and calculation. For that reason alone it is a great game for teens (and sophisticated pre-teens). But it is a game for all ages - for working adults as well as seniors. I learned the game at age 12, and I know many people who have played the game well into their nineties.

At its simplest, basic bridge bidding, playing, and scoring may be learned fairly quickly. But bridge has an almost infinite depth of complexity for those interested in improving their skills. You can pick the level at which you wish to play.

Use the menu items on the left sidebar to navigate through the site. This website identifies materials that I have created as well as external links to an array of other materials. In these locations you will find tutorials, tips, examples, videos, and other useful data for both social bridge as well as competitive (duplicate) bridge.

In particular, I have set up a 6-lesson beginner's bridge course at our local Olney (Maryland) library. The class is free for all (teens, adults, seniors) and will allow you to start your bridge-playing with the fundamentals in place. If you are interested, you will find details at the Local Classes link on the left menu bar.
